I also saw animal collective which was excellent, really enjoyed this performance, delivered on every level, crystal castles were really good, although unfortunately i don't have a huge stamina for abrasive electronic music so eventually got a little fatigued of their sound, but that was on me as their performance was spirited. I can't wait to see them again, hopefully I don't have to wait another 4 years.

I know some of the purists aren't fans of that song, mostly because it's essentially a pop song with that Robert Smith hook, but it's now my favorite. The best moment of the entire night though, at least for me, was when they did Not in Love. They did a great rendition of Plague which got the whole crowd moving like one big sentient being. Then they launched into the songs from their more recent releases. It was such an intimate gig and they played some stuff from the first record, Alice Practice being a particular highlight. They played in this tiny little club in a city about 30 miles away from my hometown. Then this past March my boyfriend surprised me with tickets. So of course I have wanted to see them live for years, but they usually come around here in the spring when I'm too poor to afford tickets. They were the first band to get me into electronic music. It felt like the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. I remember vividly the first time I heard them, on the John Hock show. The duo returned in 2010 with another self-titled album when it leaked onto the Internet in late April of that year, the band released it digitally soon after, with a physical release following that May.I have loved Crystal Castles for years. Tours with the Presets and Metric in 2007 set the stage for the release of Crystal Castles' self-titled debut album, which Last Gang released early in 2008. Kath and Glass worked on their own songs and also honed their remixing skills, tweaking songs for Klaxons as well as GoodBooks, Uffie, Health, and Bloc Party. "Alice Practice" was released as a limited-edition 7" in summer 2006 on Merok Records, also home to Klaxons its 500-copy run sold out in three days. One of the songs the pair recorded, "Alice Practice," was something of an accident: it was intended to be a demo of Glass testing out a microphone, but its presence on MySpace piqued record labels' interest. When Kath collaborated with singer Alice Glass on some songs in spring 2005, Crystal Castles' lineup was complete.

Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra's dwelling in the -He-Man and -Masters of the Universe cartoon series it's also the name of a 1983 Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band's distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an Atari 5200 sound chip. The lighting was also a problem when we saw Silversun Pickups the Friday before.įusing low-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath's solo project in late 2003. We originally got great spots right at the stage off to the left, but had to move to the back middle in order to preserve our eye-sight. Also, the stage lights were set way too low, and anyone standing at eye-level on either side of the stage got blinded. I don't know if they thought they were "pumping up the audience" or what, but whatever the reason, it was rude and will make me think twice about ever going to one of their performances again. By the time they finally started, I was so mad at the band for making their fans wait so long for no reason, I couldn't enjoy the show. My excitement turned to boredom, then irritation. We waited close to an hour for Crystal Castles to start, despite the fact that there was no discernable reason for the delay. Since the set up for the main act was already finished, I expected the show would start soon, especially since it seemed like they cut Picture Plane short. I was still very excited up until the first band, Picture Plane, finished playing. We drove 4 hours from Raleigh, NC just to see them. I love Crystal Castles, and had been anticipating this show for a very long time.
